Dear all,

Homoeopathic Research and Charities conducted a patient awareness program on Homoeopathy. It was attended by over 500 people. Nine teachers of HRC explained about Homoeopathy and its concepts. Various questions were put up during the seminar and as promised the answers to those questions are here.

Questions answered by Dr. Rajan Sankaran PDF Print E-mail

Q – Why does homoeopathy bring out the problem more acutely before curing it?
A – In my 30 years of experience in homoeopathic practice I have very rarely seen this phenomenon happening. Mostly what happens is a gentle cure. It is a myth that homoeopathy will aggravate every condition before curing it. This is not true. It brings about a cure of the whole being. The only exception is if there had been an untreated skin condition in the past which was being treated by local application of steroids, then when you discontinue the steroids, the skin condition flares up, which looks like due to administration of the homoeopathic medicine but actually it is due to discontinuation of the steroids. Also if the patient is suffering from a deeper condition of asthma and has had a history of old skin complaint, then as the asthma is getting better, the old skin complaint may come up. This is the body’s way of showing that the immunity is improving and that it is re-locating the seat of disease from more important organ (respiratory system) to less important organ (like skin). Therefore nobody needs to be frightened about any homoeopathic aggravation after the administration of a homoeopathic remedy.

Q – Diagnostic skills of homoeopaths are important. How do you know which homoeopath knows how to diagnose which medicine will fit the patients symptoms and personality?
A – It is true that the skill of the homoeopath is of importance in the treatment and therefore the patient needs to choose the homoeopath wisely and go to someone who takes a proper case history, has time for the patient and gives a single remedy to treat the patient as a whole rather than give local treatment, giving importance to all the features of the patient including his state of mind.  Generally if the patient will give a proper case history, a reasonably good homoeopath can give a remedy which is may not be exact but is closely similar for the patient at that given time. Also in acute’s the homeopath would give a remedy and evaluate how the patient is doing and if he doesn’t find adequate response then he will re-evaluate the case and give the appropriate remedy.

Q – Do you allow your patients to get them vaccinated? How do you explain them to not to allow them to take it if in case you don’t allow it?
A – I do not allow or disallow my patients for vaccination. I only explain to them pros and cons for vaccination and refer them to suitable literature so that they can take an informed choice. However I have seen that when I explain to them about the vaccinations, their side effects and when they weigh their pros and cons on vaccinations, most of them do come to the conclusion that vaccination is not desirable. There are some reference books useful to read on vaccines. They are:
VACCINATION, the Medical Assault on the Immune System by Viera Scheiner Ph.D
– Dr. Rajan Sankaran

Q – Does it mean that all the homoeopaths are on the middle line and not on the extremes?
A – Homoeopaths are human beings too and they have their own states of being, their fears and their illnesses etc. but while doing the patients case they put themselves in the background and kind of disappear from the scene while objectively being with the patient and his state of being. And with training they see their own perceptions and thoughts do not interfere in objective view of the patient.
– Dr. Rajan Sankaran

Q – How different concentration of medicine affects differently in Homoeopathy?
A – These concentrated medicines are called potencies. The ultra dilutions are prepared in a particular way of serial dilution from 0 to 5000,000 and dynamisation where the power of the medicine increases while the toxic effects reduce. There is a range of potencies available. The potency is chosen in accordance to the presenting complaints of the patient. If the presenting symptoms are local and few generals, a lower potency is selected. And as the symptoms are more refined in generals, causations or modalities the potency selected would be higher. Depending on the disease state of the patient the homoeopath uses his skill to select the potency most suitable for the patient at that given moment.

Q – My neighbor’s both Kidneys are not functioning at present. He is taking twice dialysis and attending office. He is a bachelor age 27 years from Middle class family. Is there any remedy in Homoeopathy?
A – It looks like a case of Chronic Renal Failure. These cases mean that there is a lot of damage done to the kidneys which is generally irreparable. It would definitely be worth to take Homoeopathy for such a patient. The treatment would improve the general immunity of the patient and further damage to the kidneys could be halted and probably the pathology could be reversed. To what extent it is difficult to say at the moment.

Questions answered by Dr. Sujit Chatterjee PDF Print E-mail

Q – What to do if one is craving for coffee during homoeopathic treatment?
A – In that case Coffee can be taken with sufficient gap with the homoeopathic medicine (at least 1 hr). Mild coffee will be better.
– Dr. Sujit Chatterjee

Q – Is Cancer curable with Homoeopathy, especially uterus and ovaries- cancerous cysts?
A – Yes, Like any other disease, Cancer too is curable with Homoeopathy provided it is diagnosed early & treatment starts before it spreads to other organs. In those cases where already there is metastasis of the disease to other organs/systems of the body, Homoeopathy can still help in palliating( giving relief) to the distressing symptoms without any side-effects.
– Dr. Sujit Chatterjee

Q – Are the medicines based on vegetable or animal sources? How does patient know?
A – Our medicine contains energy of vegetable, animal or mineral sources. It is so diluted that traces of substances are not present & it is pure energy. Patient can not find it unless told by the doctor.
– Dr. Sujit Chatterjee

Q – Is there any possibility of connecting Homoeopathy in Stem Cell research or Human genome study and remedy? Mr. Nitin Joshi.
A –Dear Mr. Nitin, in homoeopathy new medicines are always verified on healthy human beings. The whole process is called drug proving. So we are thinking to prepare medicine from stem cells & will try (Prove) on group of healthy homeopaths. We are very open to new research on above subjects & surely we can connect it if it is applicable to homoeopathy.
– Dr. Sujit Chatterjee

Q – Can homoeopathy treat all diseases or there are some diseases which cannot be treated by homoeopathy?
A – Yes, homoeopathy can treat all the diseases but in certain emergency for a short time we may require help from other systems or sciences for e.g.: If someone is very anaemic (Hemoglobin less than 4 gm%), or status epileptics or status asthma where very frequent attacks can do some damages to the body. So after controlling the emergency we give only our medicine. Similarly if there is vitamin deficiency e.g. in gastric or peptic ulcer vitamin B12 deficiency because this vitamin may not be absorbed from the gastro intestinal track .So till we rectify the problem external B12 is fine.
– Dr. Sujit Chatterjee

Q – I am suffering from itching in eye after cataract operation since last 5 years. I am using eye drops prescribed by eye surgeon. This is a case of my cousin sister also. Is there some remedy in homoeopathy?
A – Your particular condition can be surely helped with Homoeopathy. However, to be able to prescribe for it we need to take the whole case because in homoeopathy we treat the patient as a whole. It is therefore recommended that you consult a homoeopath in person and give detailed account of your complaints. Having understood your whole case, the homoeopath will then be able to rid you of your distress.

Questions answered by Dr Jayesh Shah PDF Print E-mail

Q – For how long should you wait while being treated with homoeopathy? Eg: In extreme loose motions, if you wait for a day or two you get dehydrated. Malaria- My daughter 13 years old had fever 101- 104 degrees which does not go down till you give her Crocin/ Metacin.
A – In acute situations the patient and the homoeopath needs to remain in touch and evaluate the progress of the case. In loose motions there is no harm waiting, as long as the child is taking as much fluids as he looses. As long as he passes urine there is no harm waiting till the diarrhoea subsides in a couple of days. Treatment of loose motions and related ailments is to replace the fluid. Most cases get well with homoeopathy and fluid replacement. The amount of fever does not matter. Fever is good for the system. It is a sign of good immune response. In some children who have tendency to febrile convulsions, to avoid it, one may need to give crocin, etc. In malaria cases one needs to evaluate every day and see if the general parameters are improving. If the intensity of the fevers and chills are getting better over a period of 2-3 days one can wait with homoeopathy.
– Dr. Jayesh Shah

Q – Please explain the dosage. We are told to put 8-10 drops of the medicine in ½ a cup of water, stir it, and then give 1-2 tsp every 3 hrs. I get little panicky and suspicious about the dose and then tend to give her more liquid than advised.
A –Homeopathic medicines are dilutions. More the dilution, more stronger is the medicine. It is exactly opposite of Allopathy. Sometimes, in acute situations dilutions in water act much faster then pills.
– Dr. Jayesh Shah

Q – Treatment/ cure for genetic or life-style disease e.g.: Cholesterol, Diabetes, Arthritis and length of treatment for the same?
A–There is good treatment for diabetes, arthritis, cholesterol in homoeopathy. One needs to understand that there are long term goals and short term goals. In the long run one wants to prevent or delay the complications of diabetes, cholesterol, etc. Long lasting and very chronic diseases need longer treatment obviously. Arthritis responds wonderfully to homoeopathy. However one needs to look into individual case to see if it is of autoimmune origin like rheumatoid arthritis or it is because of gout and uric acid or it is age related degeneration etc. One will need to remain under treatment till the person in general feels very good. Diet, regular exercise, yoga and meditation are a must to bring long lasting and permanent cure in chronic cases. In difficult cases of diabetes or insulin dependent diabetes one may need to continue some allopathic treatment. Slowly as the condition improves under the advice of a diabetes-specialist, those drugs can be reduced.

Q – I have Thyroid and I am taking Thyronorm 25 for last 1 ½ years. I am a staunch believer of homoeopathy. I take homoeopathic medicine regularly but I am unable to stop Thyronorm 25 and I am comfortable with it. Is it acceptable in homoeopathic treatment? Biplab.
A – Dear Mr. Biplab, Thyroid problems do respond to homoeopathy. I have generally experienced that medical doctors are too keen on putting a person on Thyronorm etc. In my observation patients treated only with homoeopathy have responded, even in cases with TSH between 30 and 75. Cases with TSH under 20 have a very good scope of recovering totally.  Once the Thyronorm tablets are started it is difficult to reverse the condition completely. However with homoeopathic treatment, the total need for Thyronorm reduces. Many of my patients have been able to reduce the doses to half tablet every day! I often take advice of Dr Anand Gokani, MD, Thyroid specialist in Bombay hospital. This is because he tends to help patients with diet, yoga and counseling first. This works very well with homoeopathy.
– Dr. Jayesh Shah

Q – Can you give us some names of books which can help us understand DREAMS? Does homoeopathy cure psychologically like converting a negative person to positive thinking person?
A –The book we recommend is ‘The Other Song’ by Dr Rajan Sankaran. Yes homoeopathic treatment can convert a negative thinking person into positive!
– Dr. Jayesh Shah

Q –Any medicine in Homoeopathy which can keep you hale and hearty- The ULTIMATE medicine to keep oneself healthy – constant energy booster?
A –There is no such medication that we want you to be dependent on or addicted to. Homoeopathic treatment is individualistic and wholistic. The constitutional remedy taken when in stress or physical ailment is enough to keep a person healthy and in good vigor.

Questions answered by Dr. Mahesh Gandhi PDF Print E-mail

Q – Could you please throw some light on role of homoeopathy as a treatment of choice in developmental disabilities/ childhood disorders E.g.: Cerebral Palsy/ Autism/ Learning disabilities/ Dyspraxia? Dr. Dhwani Sheth, Paediatic Occupational Therapist.
A – I get many children with developmental disabilities, autism and learning disabilities who respond extremely well to homeopathic treatment. In fact I believe that there is treatment for such disorders only in homoeopathy. I have also excellent results with delayed speech, ADHD, enuresis, attachment disorders and conduct disorders. Homoeopathy also helps in reducing certain personality traits such as excessive shyness, stubbornness, rebelliousness, jealousy, etc.
– Dr. Mahesh Gandhi(M.D Psychiatry)

Q – How homoeopathy treats anxiety? Can anxiety be a cause for high B.P?
A – Anxiety Disorder can be treated with Homoeopathy with excellent results. In people with Anxiety disorder, worry about any situation is often unrealistic or out of proportion to the situation and this in turn can lead to many physical and mental symptoms like High Blood Pressure, Irritability, Headaches, Muscle spasms, Sweating, Difficulty in concentration, Tiredness, Frequent Urination, Sleeplessness or excessive sleepiness, Trembling, Startling, etc. Homoeopathy takes into consideration of the whole personality of the patient and thereby can treat various personality traits such as anxiety, excessive anger, etc. so that the reaction of the person is appropriate to the situation.
– Dr. Mahesh Gandhi

Q – Is this normal for a child to talk in sleep about his daily routine?
A – Yes it is normal for many growing children to talk in their sleep about their daily activities. There is a lot of excitement in them and these dreams often result in them talking, laughing, crying, etc. Unless there are nightmares or sleepwalking where the child can be in danger – talking in sleep can be ignored as something quiet common and normal in children.
